Edward’s life in Chicago was fairly happy and boring. His parents were well-off as his father was a rather successful lawyer. The biggest worry in his mother’s life was the fact that World War I was raging and Edward was only a year away from the draft, which had been lowered to 18 years of age in August of 1918.
By September of that same year, the influenza epidemic hit, claiming the lives of both of Edward’s parents and very nearly taking his own as well. His physician was Carlisle Cullen, who saved him by changing him into a vampire. It was Edward’s mother who requested Dr. Cullen save Edward. She seemed to “know” that Carlisle could save him in a special way and begged him to do it.
Since that time, Edward has passed as Carlisle’s adopted son or as the younger brother of his wife before the family grew to its current size. He now poses as Carlisle and Esme's adopted son. He has been to medical school twice, but never practiced, as his control isn't as good as Carlisle's.
From 1927 until 1931, Edward had a bout of rebellion and went off for a few years on his own away from Carlisle and Esme. He figured that he could drink off of humans if they were truly evil, using his special gifts to avoid the innocent. After a while, he couldn’t “escape the debt of so much human life taken, no matter how justified” and returned to Carlisle and Esme, who were happy to have him back and welcomed him with open arms, something he didn't believe he deserved.
Around 1936, Edward moved to Forks with his family where they encountered the Quileute Indians who have the ability to transform into werewolves. A treaty was arranged stating that the wolves would leave the Cullens alone so long as they didn’t bite any humans and stayed off of the Quileute land. The Cullens lived in Forks for a few years before moving on to other places.
In 2003 the Cullens returned to Forks. It was in 2005 that Edward met Isabella Swan. Her blood “sang” for him and he became infatuated with her. She soon figured out his secret and accepted him as a vampire, telling him that she wasn't afraid. They fell in love despite odds stacked against them. When Bella became the victim of a tracker named James, Edward was forced to drink her blood to stop the venom from spreading through her system. This aided him in his resistance to Bella's blood.
Edward stayed with Bella until her disastrous 18th birthday party where Jasper tried to kill Bella when she got a papercut. He decided that Bella would be better off living a normal life without him and left Forks along with his family. He spent his time tracking Victoria all around the southern United States and even ventured into Mexico and South America. When he was told that Bella was dead, he went to Italy with the intention of forcing the Volturi into killing him. Bella and Alice arrived in Italy in time to stop him. He convinced the Volturi to let them all return to Forks with the promise that Bella would be made a vampire.
When they returned to Forks, the routine between Edward and Bella became normal again. He agreed to change Bella as long as she would marry him. He was then reminded by Jacob Black that the treaty says he is forbidden to bite -- not kill -- a human.
News reports came in shortly there after that alerted Edward and his family that a newborn vampire was loose in Seattle. The family began to investigate it further when Edward found the scent of an unknown vampire in Bella's bedroom. Bella finally had the idea that it was Victoria creating the newborns in Seattle. This new information sparked an alliance between the Cullen and the Quileutes to not only protect Bella, but to also stop the newborns from attacking anyone else.
Edward stayed out of the battle for Bella's sake, but Victoria and her helper, Riley, found them at their "camp." Edward and Seth Clearwater killed the two vampires and burned them. After the battle, Bella said her final goodbye to Jacob. Bella agreed to finally make the engagement between her and Edward official and public, and enlisted Alice's help in planning the wedding. Later, Edward sent Jacob an invitation to their wedding against Bella's wishes.
Bella and Edward then get married in the Cullens' backyard. They honey-mooned on an island that was given to Esme from Carlisle as a present -- Isle Esme. They soon found out that Bella was pregnant, against everyone's beliefs.
Bella became very sick during the pregnancy, as the baby was half-human and half-vampire and it grew very fast. She wanted to keep it, though, and Rosalie was with her, protecting her against anyone who tried to take away the baby. Jacob found out and stayed with Bella often, soon joined by Seth and Leah Clearwater. Jacob had broken off from Sam's pack and formed his own, which Seth and Leah joined. Bella finally gave birth to a baby girl who they named Renesmee – a name derived from both Edward's adoptive mother, Esme and her own mother, Esme.
Edward worried for Bella during the change. He was also very angry with Jacob, as the werewolf had imprinted on Renesmee. When Bella woke up, Edward took her hunting and they discovered that she had impossibly good control. When Bella found out about Jacob imprinting on her daughter, she snapped and got very angry with him.
The Volturi then decided to intercede when they were given evidence of an "immortal child," a vampire child that wasn't able to learn control. The Cullens got together a group of witnesses to proove that Renesmee wasn't an immortal child, but a real child that Bella had given birth to. Some of the visitors helped Bella discover that she had the power to shield herself and others. She could extend her shield to protect others from vampires' powers.
When the Volturi came, they were able to be convinced that Renesmee was to be allowed to live. They left with a blow to their pride, as the Cullens had upped them. The bond between Carlisle and Aro had been broken, and Carlisle refused to trust Aro for quite awhile. Edward and Bella returned home with Renesmee, happy and in love.
