Alice was placed in a mental asylum when she was a human due to her ability to see the future. Instead of considering it a special talent, they figured she was insane. A vampire who worked there favored her — the reason why is technically unknown. When James, a vampire hunter decided to make Alice his prey merely for the fun of having a challenge, the vampire who favored her changed her in hopes of saving her. He released her from the asylum in hopes of saving her from James, and his plan succeeded — to an extent. In revenge for loosing Alice, James killed the vampire who had saved her instead. When Alice awoke a changed vampire, she had no memory of any of these events.
As a vampire, she saw visions of the Cullen family and how they had fed off of animals instead of humans. This is what stopped Alice from feeding off of humans and becoming a savage — with no other vampires to help her, she possibly would have gotten out of control and been exterminated by the Volturi. Not only did Alice see the Cullen family, however, but she also saw Jasper and how they were meant to be together. She found him in 1948 and in 1950 they found the Cullen family.
They were taken in as two of the “children” of that household, and from then on they attended school with the others but, unlike Rosalie and Emmett, they wed only once, for that was enough for the two of them. Alice became close friends with Edward’s human girlfriend, Bella, and was the most supportive of their relationship from the very start. With Alice’s bright and cheerful personality as well as her outgoing attitude, most people find it hard to not find them comfortable in her presence, unlike how it is with some of the other vampires.
When James came to Forks, Alice did not recognize him. She learned it all later, having seen a video of James explaining everything to Bella about her past.
When the Cullen’s left Bella in 2006, Alice was the one who first came back, having seen Bella jumping off of a cliff in a vision and believed her to be dead. When Edward caught word of Bella’s “death” and went off to force to Volturi to slaughter him, it was Alice who dragged Bella to Italy so they could save Edward. Alice confessed to Bella along the way that if Edward wasn’t going to agree to change her, Alice might just change her herself.
Alice is currently planning Edward and Bella’s wedding.
