Bella was born in Forks, but her mother and father split up when she was only six months old. She spent the majority of her young life in California and then later Phoenix, Arizona where she wasn’t very popular and never felt as if she fit in. She is far too clumsy for her own good and tries to avoid anything that could worsen it.
When her mother remarried, Bella decided to move back to Forks to live with her father. She felt a bit guilty that her mother wasn’t able to spend as much time traveling with her new husband because of her, and so willingly, but not very happily, she moved in with her dad. He bought her a truck and has tried to make her feel comfortable in her new home.
At school, Bella was greeted with great interest and made friends with a few people right away, unlike at her old school. She first saw Edward and his family at lunch time and was told that they generally kept to themselves. In biology class, Bella was forced to take a seat next to Edward, as it was the only empty seat in the room. He reacted strangely to her, glaring and sitting far away, making her think he hated her. It wasn’t until two weeks later that Edward returned to school and Bella was able to properly meet him.
After a while, Bella came to guess Edward’s secret and accepted him as a vampire. He saved her life several times and made it his mission to keep her safe. The two fell in love despite the odds. Bella became the victim of a tracker named James and was saved when Edward drank her blood and stopped the venom from spreading through her system, adding to his resistance to her blood.
On her 18th Birthday, Bella got a paper cut and was put in great danger at the Cullens' home. Because of this, Edward decided to leave her. Bella existed in a near catatonic state for months afterwards and only just managed to go to school and work. She decided to take risks to “hear” Edward’s voice and enlisted the help of Jacob Black in rebuilding a motorcycle. The two became very good friends until Jacob appeared to have joined a cult that he said to have disliked before. Bella learned that Jacob and the other teenage Quileute boys are werewolves.
When Alice returned to Forks, she told Bella that Edward thinks she is dead and has plans to kill himself. The two raced to Italy where they stopped Edward and were taken in by the Volturi. They returned to Forks with the promise that Bella would become a vampire. At home, Edward agreed to change Bella as long as she married him first, something that Bella doesn't want to agree to.
They got news reports shortly afterwards that alerted Edward and his family that a newborn vampire was loose in Seattle. The family began to worry and investigate it further when Edward found the scent of an unknown vampire in Bella's bedroom, along with a few of her belongings taken. Bella finally had the idea that it was Victoria creating the newborns in Seattle, and told the Cullens this. This new information began an alliance between the Cullens and the Quileutes to not only protect Bella, but to also stop the newborns from attacking anyone else.
Bella begged Edward to stay out of the battle, and he did for her sake. Victoria and her helper, Riley, found them at their "camp," though. Edward and Seth Clearwater killed and burned the two vampires. After the battle, Bella said her final goodbye to Jacob. He kissed her and she realized that she loved him, but it wasn't enough to get her to choose Jacob over Edward. Bella agreed to finally make the engagement between her and Edward public, and enlisted Alice's help in planning the wedding. Later, Edward sent Jacob an invitation to their wedding against Bella's wishes.
Bella and Edward got married in the Cullens' backyard. Edward surprises Bella for their honeymoon by taking her to an island that was given to Esme from Carlisle as a present -- Isle Esme. They soon found out that Bella was pregnant, against everyone's beliefs.
Bella became very sick during the pregnancy, as the baby was half-human and half-vampire and it grew very fast. She wanted to keep it, though, and Rosalie was with her, protecting her against anyone who tried to take away the baby. Jacob found out and stayed with Bella often, as Bella had asked him to, soon joined by Seth and Leah Clearwater. Jacob had broken off from Sam's pack and formed his own, which Seth and Leah joined. Bella finally gave birth to a baby girl that they named Renesmee. The birth was deadly and dangerous, and ended in Edward having to inject venom straight into Bella's heart using a syringe.
The change was painful and seemingly neverending for Bella. Near the end, she was finally able to move, but didn't, in fear of screaming out and making the Cullens' worry even more. She didn't want to hurt them, especially Edward. When she woke up, she was amazed by all of the things that smelled and sounded and looked new. Edward took her hunting after she had calmed and they discovered that she had wonderful control, over both her emotions and her bloodlust. When Bella found out that Jacob had imprinted on her daughter, she nearly snapped and got extremely angry with him.
One of the Denali women -- Irina -- had seen Renesmee and believed that she was an "immortal child," a vampire child that wasn't able to learn control. Anyone who created such a creature was to be killed along with it. Irina went to the Volturi, who decided to intercede. The Cullens gathered a group of witnesses to proove that Renesmee wasn't an immortal child, but rather a real baby that Bella had given birth to before her change. Bella worried for her daughter, and was ready to send Renesmee off with Jacob to keep her safe, just in case they had to fight.
Some of the visitors helped Bella discover that she had the power to shield herself and others. She could extend her shield to protect people from vampires' powers. She could even cast away the shield so that she wasn't protected anymore.
When the Volturi came, it took quite awhile to convince them that Renesmee was not an immortal child. It seemed like everything would end and the group was ready to fight to the end. The Volturi finally decided that Renesmee would be allowed to live, and they left with their pride barely intact. Carlisle told Aro that their trust had been broken, and it would take awhile to regain it. Edward and Bella then returned home with Renesmee, happy that it was over, and still fully in love.
